their cyber security efforts, a vast majority of small to mid-sized
firms still do not fully understand the risks and implications of
failing to adequately protect their rich repositories of personal
information, corporate secrets and intellectual property.
This presentation will provide a snapshot of IT Security threats
facing law firms today and the importance of focusing on cyber security
efforts.Speakers:Richard Martinez is an IT professional in the legal
industry with 19 years of experience in infrastructure, cyber security,
SEO/SEM/SEP, project management and team building. Holding a Certified
Ethical Hacker certification and serving as the IT Manager in an Am Law
20 firm, he also consults with small to mid-size businesses on their
digital efforts from attracting new clients to retaining, optimizing and
securing their data once it is received. Previous roles in multiple Am
Law 100 firms give Richard a unique perspective of the legal technology
process from an out-sourced and in-house perspective. Jeffrey
Brandt has been the CIO for several top 100 U.S. law firms, and has 30
years of experience in the field of legal automation. He now consults to
law firms and professionals on projects as diverse as process and
electronic workflow management, knowledge management, information
governance and security, BYOD/S, communities of practice and IT
executive coaching. Jeffrey is also the Editor of the popular PinHawk
Legal Technology Digest and is a frequent educational speaker at
industry conferences.

She leads the knowledge management lawyers, business intelligence, information services, process improvement and intranet teams. Ginevra practiced law for 10 years and has been working in law firm KM for the past 16 years.Dan Hauck is the CEO of ThreadKM, a knowledge management platform that helps legal teams work together better using integrated chat, file and project management. Previously, Dan practiced law at Bryan Cave LLP, where he focused on complex commercial and antitrust litigation.Fiona Stone is a Systems Analyst at Perkins Coie LLP. She administers systems and applications for the litigation, e-discovery and personal planning groups, and manages major cloud based systems used by the firm. Fiona holds several technical certifications including Project Management Professional, and is a trained Six Sigma Green Belt and Lean expert.Mark Thorogood is the Director of Application Services at Perkins Coie. He holds several technical certifications, including Project Management Professional and Android Developer. During his tenure in the U.S. Army, Mark earned the distinguished leadership award and was the U.S. Army instructor of the year. An invited member of the International Honor Society for the Computing and Information Disciplines, his passion is enabling others to maximize the value of technology.

The discussion starts with general issues around mobile devices and third party apps, including mobile device management, the mobile app distribution model, vetting, support and training. The panel then turns to specific apps that respond to attorney needs, seem to be more heavily adopted, or help the panelists themselves be more productive through their mobile devices.Vern Cole brings more than 20 years of risk management and information governance leadership to his role as Security Architect at Perkins Coie, where he is responsible for the information security and privacy programs. Vern joined Perkins Coie in 2010, a Seattle-based law firm known for its marquee list of high-tech clients and is based in the firm’s Seattle office. Previous to Perkins Coie, Vern was the CSO for Varolii, a Seattle based technology enterprise, and Director of Western Consulting at VeriSign. Vern is a member of the LegalSEC Steering Committee.Amy Halverson manages the litigation knowledge management program at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, a firm that started in Silicon Valley and now has 14 offices across the U.S., Europe and China. The firm is known for its service to clients in the technology and life sciences industries, as well as other emerging enterprises. Amy is an attorney and former litigator. She has been at Wilson Sonsini since 2006, or "1 B.iOS." -- 1 year before iPhone. Karen Helde has worked in law firms for more than 20 years. She is currently the Director of Library, Research & Records Services at Lane Powell PC in Seattle. In addition to apps for legal, her professional interests include knowledge management, collaborative technologies, and the expanding role of law librarians.Gwyn McAlpine oversees the knowledge management, technology training and user adoption programs at Perkins Coie, a Seattle-based firm with over 1,000 attorneys in 19 offices. Perkins Coie has been named to Fortune Magazine’s Best Places to Work for 13 consecutive years. Gwyn is based in the Portland office and previously practiced law as a transactional attorney. Gwyn is a member of the Knowledge Management Peer Group Steering Committee.
